In a Kroger Mega Event situation, you MUST purchase 5 participating items (in this case) to get the additional $5 mega savings ($1 per item). So, for example you have a cart full of groceries, but you count only 9 mega items. A filler item is what you grab to get your item count up to a multiple of 5 so that you can get the mega discount on all of your items. Preferably something very inexpensive that doesn’t require a coupon, because if you had a coupon – it’s probably already in your cart!

Interesting difference with the recent Mega events here in Arizona – Fry’s Food stores. Our sales are ‘Mix or Match 5 or MORE participating items” – meaning we do not have to buy in multiples of 5. As long as I buy a minimum 5 in a single transaction – and let’s say buy another 3 items I also get $1 off those 3 items. When I noticed this for the last sale I called Fry’s corporate office to check if I was interpreting it correctly. Rep said Yes, and when I shopped and purchased 8 participating items – I did get $8.00 off.
