It’s nice that Kroger’s having a contest but most reusable bags are a sham that will be an even bigger problem in landfills than current plastic ones are. The “canvas-looking” bags near the checkout that sell for $1 or the “green” promo bag some corporation gave you won’t last. They rip easily and wear out quickly if washed in hot water to get rid of bacteria. If you throw it out you’re perpetuating the problem you sought to avoid – more stuff in landfills. If you want to recycle it you have to remove its accessories and somehow find one of the few #5 polypropylene recycling centers in the U.S (a few exist on either coast) A better answer is using something like a CRESBI crate to shop with (www.cresbi.com). They’re collapsible to save space, durable, lightweight, dishwasher safe and can replace up to 6 plastic bags depending on how liberally the bags were packed. If you really want to be green be a BOXER not a BAGGER at CRESBI.com. Don’t let these companies GREENWASH you into thinking they’re helping you go green – they just want to save the money on the plastic bags they used to pay for, if they really cared they’d use higher quality materials that last or can be recycled!
